Arua Hospital Accountant Steals Shs180m, Sent To Luzira Prison

ARUA: The Arua regional referral hospital accountant has been sent to Luzira prison for allegedly stealing Shs180m.Augustine Omongin, 56, was on Thursday, February 27, 2025, charged with embezzlement and abuse of office before being remanded to Luzira prison.
Omongin was charged before the Anti Corruption Court Principal Magistrate Grade One, His Worship Paul Mujun.He, however, denied the charges.
As a result, the Magistrate adjourned the case to 3rd March, 2025, when court is expected to hear the fate of Omongin’s bail application.
Prosecution by the Inspectorate of Government’s legal team led by the Supervisor Prosecutions, Dr. Ernest Katwesigye, alleged that Omongin, while employed as the accountant of Arua Regional Referral Hospital, caused financial loss of UGX 182,683,500 to the Government of Uganda.
Augustine Omongin, on 15th November, 2024, while employed as an Accountant deployed at Arua Regional Referral Hospital, stole UGX 88,841,750 (eighty eight million, eight hundred forty one thousand, seven hundred fifty shillings) belonging to his employer, the Government of Uganda/Arua Regional Referral Hospital, which money he had access to by virtue of his office,” Katwesigye told Court.Prosecution added that.
Augustine Omongin, between 13th October 2020 and 30th November 2024, while employed as an Accountant deployed at Arua Regional Referral Hospital, in abuse of the authority of his office, did arbitrary acts when he irregularly prepared in his names and cashed cheque no.006685 amounting to UGX93,841,750 (ninety three million, eight hundred forty one thousand, seven hundred fifty shillings) meant for the payment for training on Essential MN Guidelines, and put it to personal use, acts that were prejudicial to the interests of his employer, the Government of Uganda/Arua Regional Referral Hosp.”
I wonder why and how these personnel get full access to these funds. I suggest two or three persons within the administration of an institution be signatories and have access to funds together or jointly.
You see what happened at the Bank of Uganda? You is broken down beyond repair. Idi Amin handled cases of corruption very efficiently and as a result the government never had such thieves. In Museveni’s government corruption is the life-line running from State House to smallest unit, the LC1. The NRM government thrives in corruption and thus Museveni doesn’t have the political will to seriously deal with corruption. He beautifully talks about hating and fighting corruption but those have remained 🔥 air. Corruption is left to grow in the name of “my voters.” Our hope is only left in the next government if it is a different party, not NRM.
