WENRECO Launches 2025 Annual Run To Empower Youth Talent In West Nile

ARUA: The West Nile Rural Electrification Company (WENRECO) has launched the 2025 edition of its flagship community athletics event dubbed ‘the WENRECO Run,’ set for Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Barifa Stadium in Arua City.
Now in its third edition, the event will draw young athletes and relay teams from all 13 districts of the West Nile sub-region, competing in categories ranging from 100 to 800 meters for both boys and girls.
Winners will receive cash prizes, medals, and access to coaching opportunities supported by WENRECO and partners like the Uganda Athletics Federation.
Speaking during a pre-event briefing on Wednesday at WENRECO’s headquarters, General Manager Kenneth Kigumba highlighted the event’s focus on youth empowerment, talent development, and community unity.
“Our goal is to showcase West Nile’s immense potential to the country. By partnering with the Uganda Athletics Federation, we’re providing exposure for our talented youth.
Over the past three years, we’ve seen significant progress toward this goal, but we must continue supporting this potential to ensure it’s recognized globally,” Kigumba said.

WENRECO has committed to sponsoring standout athletes beyond the event, covering school fees, providing sports kits, and connecting them with national athletics federations for greater opportunities.
Sam Egama, the chairperson of MAYANK, an athletics body, praised WENRECO’s initiative as part of its corporate social responsibility.
“WENRECO’s support has been transformative. This year alone, they funded three trips to Kampala for national trials, giving our athletes unprecedented exposure,” he said.
The event will feature renowned Ugandan Olympic gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich as the chief runner, alongside West Nile’s own Dorcus Inzikuru and Leni Shida as chief guests.
