ARUA: President Yoweri Museveni has cautioned graduates of Muni University against reckless behavior, including drunkenness, sexual promiscuity, and extravagance, warning that such lifestyles could derail their future plans.

The President’s message was delivered on his behalf by Evelyn Anite, the State Minister for Finance (Investment and Privatization), during the university’s 8th graduation ceremony held in Arua City on Saturday, November 29, 2025.

Minister Anite represented the President, who is also the Visitor of the university, as the chief guest.

A total of 481 students graduated with various academic awards of which 159 are females (33.1%) and 322 are males (66.9%).

In his address, President Museveni congratulated the new graduates and urged them to apply the knowledge and skills acquired at the university while avoiding reckless and dangerous lifestyles.

“I congratulate the graduates. Apply the profession you have studied at Muni University, and I urge you to refrain from recklessness and dangerous lifestyles such as drunkenness, sexual promiscuity, and extravagance,” the message read.

The President described the graduation as not only a personal milestone for the graduands but also a significant contribution to Uganda’s broader agenda of socio-economic transformation.

“When the NRM government came to power in 1986, we identified the underdevelopment of human resources as one of the ten strategic bottlenecks to Uganda’s progress. You cannot sustainably transform a country without first transforming its human resource,” he said.

He emphasized that human resources are more important than natural resources, which is why the NRM government has consistently prioritized investment in education, with a strong focus on science and technology.

“Socio-economic transformation is a deliberate shift from a society limited by poverty, low productivity, and dependency to one driven by knowledge, innovation, value addition, and shared prosperity,” President Museveni added.

He commended Muni University for its programmes in science, technology, health, agriculture, education, and information systems, saying the institution is shaping a new generation of thinkers and practitioners capable of leading Uganda toward a more competitive and equitable future.

In a separate message delivered by Higher Education Commissioner Timothy Musoke Ssejjoba, the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, urged the graduates to remain lifelong learners and serve their communities with good leadership, energy, compassion, and God-given creativity.

Muni University Chancellor, retired Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi, praised the graduates for demonstrating resilience, intellectual excellence, and integrity.

He reminded them to carry forward the values of discipline, service, creativity, humility, and lifelong learning.

The Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Simon Katrini Anguma, described the graduation as the first major hill climbed in the graduates’ careers. He encouraged them to pursue further studies and remain disciplined, warning that HIV/AIDS remains a threat.

“Muni University values your life. Your parents need you alive, and humanity needs your newly acquired skills and services,” Prof. Anguma said.

One of the graduates, Alfred Egabile, who received a Master of Science in Biodiversity Conservation, welcomed the advice, saying graduates must lead by example to transform lives.

“To transform lives, we have to be exemplary to the community. The President’s message resonates strongly with us, and we must respect and promote it,” Egabile said.
