ARUA. Top National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders in Northern Uganda have expressed confidence in President Yoweri Museveni’s victory in West Nile during the 2026 general elections.

The leaders issued the assurance at a press conference held at Hotel Le Confidentiel in Arua City on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

The event was aimed at updating the public on the ongoing NRM presidential campaigns in the West Nile region.

During the press conference, NRM leaders affirmed that their presidential candidate, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, will secure a landslide win in West Nile, citing the massive support at his rallies in Pakwach, Nebbi, Zombo, Madi-Okollo, Arua, Maracha, Koboko districts, and Arua City.

“From the testimonies and the massive turnout of NRM supporters at rallies across West Nile, we are optimistic that in the 2026 elections, NRM candidate Yoweri Museveni will win by a landslide,” said Denis Hamson Obua, the Government Chief Whip and NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda.

Obua explained that the anticipated victory stems from residents’ awareness of their progress under NRM rule.

“The people of West Nile remember where they came from, where they are now, and that only the NRM government can take them to their next destination,” he added.

Obua highlighted the region’s transformation: “In the past, West Nile led in producing refugees who fled into exile. Under the NRM, they have all returned home. Today, Uganda is Africa’s top refugee-hosting nation.”

Obua also credited the NRM, under President Museveni, with dialoguing and disarming rebel groups, fostering the current peace in the region.

Similarly, the NRM General Secretary Richard Todwong noted the region’s growth from three districts in 1986 (Arua, Nebbi, and Moyo) to over ten today.

“These administrative structures ensure better service delivery from the central government,” he said.

Todwong pointed to infrastructure gains: “In 1986, no tarmac road linked West Nile to the rest of Uganda. Now, you can drive on quality tarmac from Kampala to Koboko and the Oraba border. We are also connecting Koboko-Yumbe-Moyo-Adjumani to the Atiak-Nimule Road, and Pakwach-Panyimur-Dei-Goli-Vurra. This progress is why West Nile will vote for President Museveni.”

He emphasized that the 2026 election is about safeguarding nationwide gains.

West Nile NRM Regional Whip Jackson Atima Lee Buti echoed the same sentiment, praising the government’s transformative work since 1986.

“The region was war-ravaged, its people scattered in refugee camps in DR Congo and South Sudan, leaving it like a wilderness,” he said.

“But President Museveni called them back to rebuild their country and live well at home. That’s why huge crowds have turned out for his rallies,” added Atima, also MP for Arua Central Division.

He noted that lasting peace has driven infrastructure, social development, and improved livelihoods.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (in charge of Investment and Privatization) Evelyn Anite said hope lies with President Museveni, who will eliminate grass-thatched houses through empowerment.

“These will vanish via household income from wealth-creation funds like Parish Development Model (PDM), which the President has rolled out and will expand this financial year to all parishes,” Anite said. “People are seeing real economic change.”

She added: “They once thought electricity and roads were for the rich. Now, Museveni’s government has touched their lives through PDM and Emyooga. That’s why West Nile has turned out in huge numbers to support him.”
