ARUA CITY: Oasis Primary School in Arua City clinched the FUFA Primary Schools Odilo Girls’ Championship title with a 2–0 victory over Kampala’s Habanomu Quality Academy at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

Star forward Jackline Happy Joseph scored both goals, securing the crown for the West Nile region school.

The Odilo Primary Schools Championship, popularly known as “Odilo,” is FUFA’s flagship national competition for primary schools, hosted at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

The tournament brings together regional champions in both boys’ and girls’ categories and is closely followed by youth development stakeholders and local football academies.

Oasis Primary School administrator Gerald Tayo emphasized that girls’ football is a vital tool for nurturing talent and promoting quality education through scholarships.

He praised the team for elevating the West Nile region’s profile.

“We’ve seen tremendous benefits,” Tayo said. “Many girls have stayed in school because of football. We provide bursaries to talented but vulnerable girls who might otherwise drop out. Sports keep them engaged, physically fit, and away from risky behaviors like juvenile delinquency or harmful peer groups. Schools must prioritize such initiatives to retain and empower girls.”

Head coach Emmanuel Opini revealed that the team’s next goal is to compete at the East African regional tournament.

He encouraged other schools to embrace sports to keep girls engaged and protect them from challenges like early marriage.

“Our next target is the East African championship,” Opini said. “We competed in the FEASSA Games previously and reached advanced stages but didn’t win. We’re committed to intensive training to ensure we triumph next year and bring pride to our region. I urge other schools to join us in promoting girls’ sports to keep them in school and open future employment opportunities.”

Players expressed gratitude for the opportunity and called on more girls to participate in football and other sports to develop their talents.

“Our hard work, team spirit, and excellent coaching paid off,” said one player. “Last year, we traveled to Kenya for the East African tournament, which gave us valuable experience despite not winning. That motivated us to win the FUFA Odilo title this time. With God’s grace, we aim to bring home another trophy next year.”

The 2025 tournament marks the fourth edition of the FUFA Odilo Championship since its inception in 2020.
