ARUA CITY: One person has been arrested and three cases of vandalism reported during the recently concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primary elections for parliamentary candidates in Arua City, according to Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Salim Kumakech.

Speaking during a post-election briefing on Monday, Kumakech revealed that security personnel arrested one individual in Central Division for attempting to incite electoral violence.

The suspect has been released on bond as investigations continue.

Additionally, three incidents of property vandalism were recorded, including the stoning of private vehicles and a truck belonging to a candidate, allegedly by supporters of rival candidates in Ayivu East.

“These acts of hooliganism targeted unsuspecting members of the public and a candidate’s vehicle, with shattered glasses were reported,” Kumakech said.

“One case has been submitted to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) for advice, and investigations are ongoing.”

Despite these incidents, Kumakech noted that the primary elections were largely peaceful, with a 99% success rate in maintaining security.

He commended the security forces for their efforts in upholding law and order throughout the process and assured continued vigilance as elections for mayoral and councillor positions approach.

Addressing concerns about electoral malpractice, Kumakech encouraged dissatisfied candidates to file formal petitions with the NRM Electoral Commission or seek legal redress.

“No candidate has yet submitted evidence of electoral misconduct,” he stated. “I urge participants to accept defeat honorably. Losing an election is not the end, and baseless accusations of foul play are uncalled for.”

The declared winners of the NRM primaries in Arua City are Hon. Phiona Onzima for Ayivu West Constituency, Hon. Atima Lee Jackson for Arua Central Division, and Hon. Eng. Tiyo William Odaa for Ayivu East Constituency.
