ARUA: St. Joseph’s College Ombaci in Arua City secured second place at the National Science Fair held last week at Kololo Secondary School in Kampala.

The competition featured 23 regions, with Arua represented by four schools: Mvara SS, St. Mary’s Ediofe SS, Muni Girls’ SS, and St. Joseph’s College Ombaci.

Ombaci earned their spot at the national level after clinching first place at the Arua regional fair hosted at Mvara SS.

At the nationals, their innovative science and technology project won them a silver medal, marking them as the second-best team in the country.

Grism Agupiyo, the Head of Science and Technology at St. Joseph’s College Ombaci, credited the students’ success to the hands-on approach of the new competency-based curriculum introduced by the government four years ago.

“We competed at the National Science Fair in Kololo and secured second place nationwide,” Agupiyo said.

“Our journey began at the regional level in Mvara, where we took first. At the nationals, our project was rated the second best in the country, earning us a silver medal. The new curriculum emphasizes practical skills, enabling students to excel in such competitions.”

Students expressed pride in their achievement, highlighting the benefits of the new curriculum.

They noted that it fosters specialization, helps identify talents early, and encourages practical application of knowledge during high school.

The curriculum also provides a platform for creativity and innovation, empowering students to address global technological challenges.

Bob Kennedy, a student at St. Joseph’s College Ombaci, shared his excitement: “It was a tough competition, and we faced many challenges. We didn’t expect to win a trophy, but we’re motivated to aim higher next year. We’re working on innovations to solve global and local problems. My message to students and people in West Nile is to stand up and showcase their talents. The Bible says God gave everyone a talent—don’t let yours go to waste.”

The National Science Fair promotes innovation, nurtures young talent, and advances STEM education across Uganda.

It encourages scientific inquiry, aligns with national development goals, fosters pride, and inspires student-led solutions to local challenges.
