16-Year-Old Girl Arrested for Allegedly Killing Mother in Terego After Dispute

TEREGO: Police in Terego District are investigating a tragic incident in which a 16-year-old girl, only identified as Scovia, is accused of killing her 49-year-old mother, Grace Mariku, following a domestic dispute after a drinking session.
According to SP Collins Asea, the West Nile Police Public Relations Officer, the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, at approximately 9:30 AM in Akua Cell, Awaa Ward, Leju Town Council.

Mariku, a peasant farmer from Elavu Cell in Alia Ward, was reportedly drinking local alcohol with her daughter, Scovia, early that morning.
The two returned home around 9:00AM when a heated quarrel broke out.
Preliminary investigations suggest the argument escalated, and Scovia allegedly assaulted her mother with a stick, fatally injuring her by forcing it into her nostrils.
Passersby found Scovia sitting beside her mother’s lifeless body and alerted authorities.
The teenager was arrested and handed over to the Terego District Probation Officers before being transferred for custody.
Scovia is currently detained as investigations continue. She is expected to be charged under Uganda’s juvenile justice procedures.
