NWOYA – At least six people were killed and several others injured in a horrific road accident involving a Nile Star bus in Nwoya district early Monday morning.
Police attributed the crash to reckless driving by the bus driver. Four people — three males and one female died at the scene, while two others, a woman and her child, succumbed to injuries at Anaka General Hospital. Fourteen victims with serious injuries are still admitted at the hospital.
The accident occurred at around 01:15 am on May 4, 2026, along Pakwach – Karuma road in Lapok Mor village, Purongo Town Council, Nwoya district.
According to Nwoya District Traffic Officer, Khasule Ogwal, the accident involved an Isuzu bus (registration UBP 736U) belonging to Nile Star Bus Company and a Mercedes Benz Actros trailer (registration SSD 040A/SSD 498C).
The bus was driven by Kasim Abulo Mandela, while the trailer was driven by Abubaker Mohamed, a South Sudanese national transporting salted fish from South Sudan to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The driver of the Nile Star bus, which was travelling from Arua, was driving recklessly. Passengers reportedly complained to the conductor, who responded rudely instead of addressing their concerns,” the police report stated.
“On reaching Purongo, the bus driver attempted to overtake two other buses ahead of him and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer in the middle of the road,” the report added.
ASP Ogwal said the cause of the accident was purely due to reckless driving. The bus driver has been detained at the police station pending further interrogation and court proceedings.
