MARACHA – Learning at Nyadule Hill Primary School has long been disrupted during the rainy season, forcing pupils to study in a makeshift structure covered with tarpaulin on top but exposed on the sides.
“When it starts raining, our teachers usually send us home, but sometimes the rain beats us right inside the classrooms. We have been enduring the rain and studying in the cold,” said Vincent Eguma, a Primary Four pupil told journalists on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
The makeshift structure, which is divided into four classrooms, accommodates over 400 pupils from Primary One to Primary Four. It has been the only visible symbol of Nyadule Hill Primary School, which was originally established in 1952 as Kololo Primary School in Nyadule Cell, Ombaci Ward, Agaii Town Council, Maracha District.

Amos Atiku, the Agaii Town Council Chairperson, recalls that the school was initially started by a late catechist identified only as Njilo.
“The school would start and then disappear. We later realized that this community in Ombaci Ward had no government primary school, and the nearest one was about 2 kilometres away. That is why we revived the school using this makeshift structure you see here,” Atiku explained.
Erick Munguci, a Primary One pupil, said the biggest challenge has always been during the rainy season.
“The rain often washes away our books when it comes with strong winds. Sometimes I feel like not coming back to school, just like other pupils who dropped out. But because I want to become a doctor in the future, I keep tolerating the situation,” Munguci said.
Like other pupils at the school, Munguci is now filled with joy following the construction of a new permanent classroom block by Nelson Uhuru, the Maracha County MP-Elect.
The four-classroom block, worth over Shs100 million, is nearing completion. The project was initiated after Uhuru learned about the terrible learning conditions at the school during his campaign last year.

Uhuru has constructed similar classroom blocks in nearly all sub-counties of Maracha County even before assuming office. He says his priority is to improve education and health infrastructure across the constituency.
Upon being sworn in, Uhuru intends to lobby for more infrastructural development from the government and donors so that his people can access the services they deserve.
“I’m now happy that Hon. Uhuru has built this new structure for us, which is going to save us from the cold and rain. I want to appeal to my fellow pupils who had dropped out of school to come back because our learning conditions are going to improve,” Munguci added.
Valentino Oduga, a parent, commended Uhuru for constructing the classroom block, describing it as the first time an MP has taken such an initiative in the area.

“As parents, we are now planning to construct a toilet facility and teachers’ houses for the school,” Oduga said.
“If Uhuru can do this even before being sworn in, imagine what he will do for us when he finally assumes office. We are requesting the government to work closely with him to ensure this school develops for the benefit of our children,” he added.
According to Atiku, many people doubted that Uhuru, being a fresh graduate, would manage to raise funds and complete the structure.
“As a Town Council, we are now going to push the government to take over the school so that they can construct another block. This will enable the school to expand up to Primary Seven in the near future,” Atiku said.

Fred Aguta, a teacher by profession, expressed gratitude to Uhuru for supporting the education sector.
“Investing in education is a sure way of alleviating poverty in the community,” Aguta noted.
Charles Dribia, a member of Uhuru’s campaign team, revealed that the MP-Elect began by constructing a similar classroom block at Oluo Primary School in Alivu Parish. He also donated bags of cement and bought bricks to support classroom construction at Alio Primary School in Ambidro Parish, both in Kijomoro Sub-county.
Uhuru is equally constructing another classroom block at Sacred Heart Secondary School in Ambidro, also in Kijomoro Sub-county. He has done the same in Oluffe and Obiba Sub-counties, among other places.
“He has also supported health centres. Uhuru is doing all these projects even before assuming office. These are all community-driven initiatives. We are now urging him to go and ask the NRM government to reward us for voting overwhelmingly,” Dribia emphasized.
