Two Yumbe Residents Charged with Treason, Remanded to Arua Gov’t Prison

ARUA. Two residents of Yumbe district have been remanded to Arua government prison for allegedly forming a rebel group with the aim of overthrowing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s well established government.
Habibu Arish Ajobe aka GENERAL, 45, a peasant also a resident of Oyaru village, Bikeyo Parish, Yumbe Town Council and Ayima Amidu, 27, a builder and a resident of Mazora village, Ayuru Parish, Odravu West Sub-County, all in Yumbe district were produced before Arua Grade One Magistrate, His Worship Edgar Tukahaabwa on Friday, May 2, 2025.
This is after the duo was charged with Treason and Misprison of Treason.
Court documents indicate that the two accused locals’ case was registered on April 7, 2025 at Yumbe Central Police Station as Yumbe CRB 085/2025 and the file was later sanctioned by the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) Arua office on April 30, 2025, leading to their production in court amidst tight security.
While in court, the accused persons were remanded to prison without taking plea to the charges read to them until May 13, 2025 when they will be committed to High Court.
On the first count of Treason, court heard that Habibu Arish Ajobe aka GENERAL, Ayima Amidu and others still at large between 1995 and 2025, at various places in West Nile region in Uganda contrived a plot by force of Arms to overturn the Government of Uganda as by law established and expressed or declared such a plot by utterances, overt acts to wit: verbal expression of intention to wage an armed rebellion against the government of Uganda.
Court was also informed that the accused locals were forming a rebel group known as Uganda People’s Liberation Army, recruiting individuals to join the rebel group, mobilization and acquisition of Arms and Ammunitions, carried Armed attacks on civilians and attacked military installation at Bidibidi Military Barracks.
On the second count of Misprison of Treason, court was told that Habibu Arish Ajobe aka GENERAL, Ayima Amidu and others still at large between 1995 and 2025, at various places in West Nile region in Uganda knowing that another person intended to commit Treason did not give information thereof, with all reasonable dispatch to the Minister, other administrative officers, Magistrate or an officer in charge of a police station or use of reasonable endeavours to prevent commission of Treason.
As a result, the criminal case is being registered in court as A – 0020 of 2025.
The two accused persons were later driven at a neck-breaking-speed by Armed military officers to Arua government prison in a white van commonly known as Drone.
