Joseph Odama, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate for Vurra Constituency Member of Parliament, has called for public support as he pledges to combat corruption in Arua District.

He highlighted the alleged misappropriation of UGX 1 billion in annual road funds allocated for district road rehabilitation and maintenance.

Odama emphasized that corruption has left many roads in Arua District in poor condition, severely impacting business, agriculture, and mobility.

During his campaign launch on Monday, June 30, 2025, after being successfully nominated for the NRM flagbearer polls, Odama outlined his priorities: improving Vurra’s road network, enhancing healthcare delivery, promoting education, increasing access to clean water, fostering socio-economic transformation, and empowering youth and women.

“We have community access roads and district roads, but the government allocates UGX 1 billion annually to districts. The question is how effectively this money is being used,” Odama said.

He added that: “If you calculate the funds and the road network in Arua District, this amount is sufficient to rehabilitate all district roads. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story. This points to corruption, which I, together with the people of Vurra, will fight to eliminate.”

Arua District, once encompassing Arua City but now limited to Vurra, faces significant challenges, including inadequate healthcare facilities.

Many residents must travel over 5 kilometers to access medical services. Odama vowed to advocate for a general hospital to address these pressing healthcare needs.

“By policy, every district should have a general hospital. Although Vurra, now Arua District, has Bondo Health Centre IV, which is slated for elevation to a general hospital, this has not yet materialized,” Odama noted.

“The distances people travel to access health facilities are too long. We need to bring healthcare closer to the people.”

Joseph Odama, a former journalist with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation Television (UBC TV), will face the incumbent MP Hon. Yovan Adriko, former Minister Hon. Eng. Gabriel Aridru, Lenia Charity, and other contenders in the NRM primary elections scheduled for July 16, 2025.

  1. Joseph Odama, is the best choice to try out other than the MP Hon. Yovan Adriko, former Minister Hon. Eng. Gabriel Aridru, Lenia Charity. Aridru has been there for ages but has nothing to show. Adriko is simply mentally asleep.
